How to Look 5 Years Younger: A DIY Sweet Potato Mask for Softer Skin

Did you know sweet potatoes are some of nature’s most potent anti-aging weapons? Who knew these little orange edibles possessed such powers? But they do. A sweet potato mask is the perfect way to revive a dull complexion.

Sweet potatoes contain vitamin A, which combats aging, smooths crow’s feet, and boosts collagen production, says Dr. Ellen Marmur, a Cornell-educated, board-certified New York dermatologist.

Other benefits? Sweet potatoes also contain copper and selenium to further diminish signs of age and blast wrinkles into oblivion. Copper stimulates collagen production, and selenium smooths fine lines and prevents wrinkle formation.

So, if you’re tired of looking worn and tired, fret no more; instead, reach for a sweet potato—and some yogurt.

Here is one DIY sweet potato face mask recipe Dr. Marmur recommends. To begin, head to the kitchen and prepare the ingredients below.

Sweet Potato and Yogurt Mask: Prep Materials

  • 1 whole sweet potato (skin on)
  • 1/4 cup full-fat Greek yogurt
  • 1 boiling pot
  • 1 knife (to slice the potato skin)

To make the mask, boil one whole sweet potato, skin on, for 20 to 30 minutes. Next, slice the potato skin a few times, and then rub off the skin. Then, mash the potato with a masher or a fork, add the yogurt, and let the mixture cool until it’s comfortable to the touch.

Now, apply to your skin, wait 20 to 30 minutes, and rinse. Follow with a serum and a moisturizer of your choice.

The yogurt calms, moisturizes, and exfoliates your skin, says Dr. Marmur. And when combined, the sweet potato and yogurt work magic, softening and hydrating skin and smoothing crow’s feet. After 30 minutes, your skin will reawaken.

You can also apply the mask to your neck and hands.

So, give it a try and feel free to share your thoughts. Enjoy your weekend—and your new skin!
