Did you know pearl powder has been used for centuries in Chinese skin care and medicine to lighten and brighten skin? Since ancient times, women have been grinding pearls into powder, mixing it into their moisturizers, and creating homemade pearl masks.
Back in 624 AD, the empress Wu Zetian discovered the powers of pearl powder first-hand. According to historical records, the empress used pearl powder to maintain her flawless complexion well into her 60s, says acupuncturist Evelyn Clarke.
She took pearl powder daily as a medicine and applied pearl powder to her skin. When she ascended the throne at 65 years old, her beauty had become legendary, and her skin was said to be as radiant as a young woman.Evelyn Clarke
Today, however, pearl powder is no longer reserved for royalty. You, too, can incorporate this powder into your skin care routine.

Pearl Powder: The Science
So, how does pearl powder work?
Pearls contain powerful compounds that keep skin healthy and radiant. Pearl powder contains calcium, trace minerals, and amino acids to even skin tone, strengthen skin, and speed skin cell regeneration and recovery, according to Healthline. In Chinese medicine, pearl powder is also used to detox skin and calm inflammation.
Western science also recognizes the benefits of pearl powder. For instance, in 2019, Healthline’s Dr. Rose Wilson and Dr. Grace Gallagher wrote: “New research has shown that when taken orally, pearl powder can help the body create antioxidants and fend off free radicals.”
Other benefits? Pearl powder also boosts collagen production to help skin stay smooth, firm, and young.
Pearl Powder: The Research
Other benefits of pearl powder include the following:
- minimizes appearance of pores
- reduces redness
- smooths texture
- contains conchiolin to hydrate and brighten
- contains over 30 immunity-enhancing trace minerals, including silica, selenium, copper, and iron
- heals skin with amino acids
Some research even suggests pearl powder improves mental health. For instance, pearl powder contains magnesium, which increases the body’s GABA levels to ward off depression, anxiety and insomnia, Healthline says.
